Former Queens Park Rangers and Rangers midfielder Ray Wilkins suggested on the Call Collymore show on talkSPORT on Saturday evening (February 13) that Newcastle United need to sign defensive players.
Wilkins made the comments following Newcastle’s embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
“It is time that Newcastle started concentrating defensively buying players, there’s no two ways about it, because at the moment they are short,” said the former Chelsea midfielder.
Newcastle have been defensively vulnerable so far this season and have conceded as many 49 goals in 26 Premier League matches.
Steve McClaren’s side have conceded far too many goals, and for the Magpies to retain their top-flight status, that needs to be sorted rightaway.
Interestingly, McClaren did not sign any defenders in the January transfer window, perhaps an indication that he has compete faith in the players that he currently has.
It is a gamble, and one which Newcastle fans will hope pays off. If it does not, then the Magpies could be in deep trouble.
