Paul Merson criticises Arsenal for not having a Plan B

The former Gunner believes it is the reason they have not won the Premier League in the past.

Arsenal haven’t got a Plan B, and that is why they don’t win the league, Paul Merson has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12:30pm, February 15th.

The Gunners are firmly in the title race this season, currently sitting third in the table and just two points away from leaders Leicester City.

They beat the Foxes on Sunday afternoon, with a last gasp winner from Danny Welbeck securing all three points and getting their title bid back on track.

Merson though, has criticised the side, saying their lack of a Plan B is the reason they haven’t won the title before now.

“Arsenal haven’t got a plan B, they never have done,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“That’s why they don’t win the league. They have one plan; go out, you’re better than the other team you’ll win.”

While Merson says that Arsenal don’t have a Plan B, recent weeks have seen them change their style considerably to secure the points they need.

The win over Bournemouth was the clear example of that as they abandoned their usual passing style and focused on playing direct into striker Olivier Giroud, something that worked to help Mesut Ozil opening the scoring on the day.

It also occurred in the win over Leicester, with Mesut Ozil’s free kick being headed in by Welbeck, again demonstrating that new direct style they have taken on board.

Both instances suggest that they do indeed have a Plan B, despite what former star Merson may have to say on the matter.
