Liverpool confirmed on Monday that they have agreed a deal to sign Joel Matip on a free transfer.
The centre-back will join from German club Schalke, and becomes the first player Jurgen Klopp has signed from the Bundesliga.
European football expert and scout Tor-Kristen Karlsen believes the Reds have bagged a bargain, stating his belief Matip worth up to £18 million, via a series of tweets.
In my view, getting Joel Matip on a Bosman is a very good deal for Liverpool. Would probably cost £15-18M on a long-term contract (1/3)— Tor-Kristian Karlsen (@karlsentk) February 15, 2016
Being (reasonably) pacy & powerful he should be fine dealing with the intensity & physicality of the PL. Excellent in the air too (2/3)— Tor-Kristian Karlsen (@karlsentk) February 15, 2016
Can appear a bit "untidy" and prone to the odd mistake, but generally decent on the ball. Improved a lot over the past 18 months (3/3)— Tor-Kristian Karlsen (@karlsentk) February 15, 2016
His comments highlight that Liverpool have signed a very good player with real potential, and doing so on a free make it even better business.
Liverpool's defence has been one of their weak points this season, underlined by the fact they had to make a desperation loan move in January to sign Steven Caulker.
Matip's deal makes it more unlikely the defender will sign permanently, unless he can go onto have a major impact between now and the end of the season.
