The young Irishman has joined Cork City for the rest of the season.
The 20-year-old centre-back has featured six times for Celtic’s first-team to date but with just one appearance this season – back in August against Dundee United – he has temporarily moved on in pursuit of regular first-team football.
A previous loan spell at Oldham Athletic seemed to be going well as he played every minute against Bradford City and Peterborough United but he was benched after a 5-1 defeat against Posh and was injured shortly after.
Since then he has been recovering at Celtic but he will now play for Cork City until the start of July.
Celtic have a number of promising young players coming through the ranks right now and O’Connell has the talent to have a bright future with the Bhoys.
But he has a long way to go and this move to Ireland will at least see him get regular game-time before he bids to impress Celtic manager Ronny Deila once again during pre-season.
