Tottenham travel to Italy to take on Fiorentina in the Europa League this week.
Murphy said: “I’d give him [Dele Alli] a break. I’d leave Dembele out as well. Depending on what he’s got in reserve, Alderweireld’s performances and because of how good and important he is, I’d leave him out as well. They’ve got four great full-backs so can rotate them. It’s in the middle of the park, and that man up top [where rotation is needed]. Maybe play Son up there [striker].”
Spurs ended the weekend just two points off top spot in the Premier League table, and on the best form of every club in the top four.
They are being considered the most likely contenders to win the league now, but the one thing that could affect their title challenge is the Europa League.
Having to play on Thursday nights will increase the fatigue in a Spurs squad who play a very intense style of football, and it is not known whether Pochettino will take the European competition seriously.
The head coach’s attitude will become clearer later this week, with Tottenham travelling to Italy on Thursday to take on Fiorentina.
If a full strength team is played, then many will suspect that Spurs are planning to win the competition, but Murphy wants to see some key members of the squad rested against the Serie A team.
He has named Dele Alli and Mousa Dembele as two players to be rested, whilst also suggesting that Toby Alderweireld should be rested if there is a viable back-up option.
Heung-Min Son has also been touted to start, playing upfront in place of Harry Kane.
Pochettino looks like a coach who takes every game seriously, but he could be willing to neglect the Europa League with Spurs set to fight for the Premier League title for the next few months.
