Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata has told the club's official website that he didn't know who Erik Sviatchenko was before he signed for the Bhoys.
Boyata, a summer signing from Manchester City, was brought in to replace fellow Belgian Jason Denayer in the Celtic defence, and he has been a regular for the Bhoys ever since that move.
Unfortunately for Celtic, their defence hasn't been anywhere near as impressive as last season. The departure of Virgil van Dijk to Southampton has hit Celtic hard, and his replacement Jozo Simunovic has spent large chunks of the season out injured.
After some poor defensive displays, manager Ronny Deila chose to dip into the transfer market again, this time snapping up Erik Sviatchenko.
The Danish international, 24, had been a star in the Danish Superliga, helping FC Midtjylland win the title for the first time in their history last season, making him something of a coup for Celtic.
So far, Sviatchenko has impressed in the Celtic defence, and will be looking to strike up a strong partnership with Boyata whilst Simunovic recovers from his latest injury blow.
Now, Boyata has told the club's official website that he didn't know who Sviatchenko was before he signed for Celtic - but his early opinion is that the Dane is a good defender.
"I didn’t know who he was before he came here but he is a good defender," said Boyata. "We now have a lot of good defenders in the squad now and that can increase the competition for places and raise our performance levels higher."
"We know it’s a long season. I was out injured and Efe took my position and now Jozo was out and Erik has come in so it’s good to have some fresh signings and that can only help us," he added.
What have you thought of Sviatchenko so far?
