The former Tottenham boss has been discussing the centre-back.
Tim Sherwood believes Toby Alderweireld could be the best defender in the Premier League and says he is as important for Tottenham Hotspur as Vincent Kompany is for Manchester City, according to BBC Football.
Both Kompany and Alderweireld featured on Sunday afternoon as Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-1.
And the former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss told Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night: "I was worried when Jan Vertonghen limped off [earlier in the season]. But Alderweireld for me is as important to Tottenham as Kompany is to Manchester City. Maybe the best defender in the Premier League."
It's a big statement as Kompany's importance to Manchester City is clear for all to see - despite Spurs still winning at the Etihad Stadium while he played.
As good as Jan Vertonghen has been, Tottenham fans would likely rather lose him to injury than Alderweireld - so impressive has the Belgian looked at White Hart Lane this season.
Losing him as well as Vertonghen would be a huge blow but Mauricio Pochettino's fitness work means his key players have generally kept injury free this season.
The return of the Europa League will make things harder for Tottenham in that regard but there are still plenty of defensive options for Pochettino in north London.
