Sky Sports pundit suggests the factor that will decide Newcastle’s fate

Newcastle United were hammered by Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has told Sky Sports that Newcastle United’s fate depends on their home matches against teams around them in the Premier League table.

Newcastle are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 24 points from 26 matches.

The Magpies are level on points with 17th-placed Norwich City and are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.

Steve McClaren’s side suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Winterburn has graded Newcastle’s performance against the Blues as ‘F’ and told Sky Sports: “Newcastle were woeful, say no more.

"Their hopes of Premier League survival hinge on their home games against the teams around, so it will be very interesting to see whether they can avoid the drop.”

Sunderland and Aston Villa are below Newcastle in the Premier League table, while Norwich City, Swansea City, Bournemouth and West Bromwich Albion are all in danger of getting relegated from the top flight of English football.

Newcastle will return to action on March 2 when they take on Stoke City away from home at the Britannia Stadium in the Premier League.
