Former Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage said on the BBC Radio 5 live 606 show on Saturday evening (February 13) that Jonjo Shelvey needs to do more defensive work for Newcastle United.
Savage made the comments following Newcastle’s 5-1 defeat to Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
“Shelvey has done well,” said the former Wales international. “A few people have done analysis on the way he passes the ball, but I tell you what - they don’t need him doing that, they need him defensively.
“At times today, I watched the game, his running back towards his own goal at times was non-existent.”
Shelvey started the game against Chelsea and played for the entire 90 minutes, but he failed to make a huge impact.
The 23-year-old midfielder took shots, had a pass accuracy of 88%, put in five crosses, attempted three dribbles, won 33% of his tackles, and made two interceptions, two clearances and one block.
So far this season, the former Liverpool man has featured in five Premier League matches for Newcastle.
The England international has created nine chances, has a pass accuracy of 86% and a shot accuracy of 50%, and has won four dribbles and five tackles.
