Paul Merson has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, which was broadcast on 13 February, that Aston Villa’s players would have been going mad after hearing Remi Garde’s comments after their win against Norwich City.
Villa beat Norwich 2-0 just over a week ago, to pick up just their third victory of the season.
But Garde suggested after that match that Villa did not actually play particularly well in the contest.
“I’m very pleased for the players because they deserve a victory, not especially today I mean because I'm not sure we played our best game,” Garde told Sky Sports, after watching his side beat Norwich.
Merson believes that those comments would have disillusioned Villa’s squad, who would have simply wanted to celebrate an all to rare victory.
“The manager is half saying that he doesn’t think they have much of a chance,” the former Arsenal midfielder said. “They’ve just won a football match, and he’s going ‘that wasn’t very good.’
“If you’re sitting there and you haven’t won for 11 games you’d be going mad [listening to that].”
Villa’s players certainly seemed unmotivated when they took on Liverpool in their most recent fixture.
The Claret and Blues were beaten 6-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s side on Sunday afternoon, and Villa's squad seemed resigned to their fate throughout the contest.
Villa are currently eight points adrift of safety, and now only a remarkable escape will stop them from playing Championship football next term after what has been a terrible campaign for players and fans alike.
