Newcastle have missed out on another target, with Liverpool snapping up Joel Matip.
Liverpool confirmed on their official website they have secured a deal to sign Joel Matip on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Schalke star has the potential to be a gem for the Reds and at little risk, but they were not the only Premier League side interested in his signature.
The Northern Echo claimed in October that Matip had become Newcastle's first priority defensive target for January, with the Chronicle even sending a reporter to Germany to scout Matip first hand for a special feature in December.
Yet the mid-season transfer window came and went with the Cameroon international remaining in the Bundesliga, and Newcastle did not even sign a single defender despite their weaknesses at the back.
These were exposed at the weekend as Chelsea ripped them apart at Stamford Bridge in a 5-1 win, which left them in the relegation zone.
Their loss is Liverpool gain, and supporters reacted with disappointment to learn Matip was heading to Anfield...
Former #nufc target Joel Matip now signs for Liverpool & becomes one of Klopp's first transfers. Ahh well, we have Steven Taylor.— Daniel White (@danwhitepr) February 15, 2016
Very dissapointed with never fully went fully for Matip, not proven in this league but on a free you cant make much a mistake. #NUFC— NUFC HUB (@NUFCHub) February 15, 2016

Schalke's Matip to Liverpool at the end of the Season on a free transfer. That's the genius of Jurgen. Meanwhile McClaren can't BUY right.— Chris-Leo Ngaruthi (@Ngaruthi) February 15, 2016
If Matip is successful at Liverpool it will prove what a joke our head scout really is @NUFC Only ever buys shite from abroad, not quality.— Steve Wallwork (@stevewallwork) February 15, 2016
