New Liverpool signing Joel Matip could have cost up to £18m claims expert

Liverpool are to sign Joel Matip on a free transfer.

Liverpool confirmed on Monday that they have agreed a deal to sign Joel Matip on a free transfer.

Matip is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Reds confirmed on their official website an agreement is in place.

The centre-back will join from German club Schalke, and becomes the first player Jurgen Klopp has signed from the Bundesliga.

European football expert and scout Tor-Kristen Karlsen believes the Reds have bagged a bargain, stating his belief Matip worth up to £18 million, via a series of tweets.

His comments highlight that Liverpool have signed a very good player with real potential, and doing so on a free make it even better business.

Liverpool's defence has been one of their weak points this season, underlined by the fact they had to make a desperation loan move in January to sign Steven Caulker.

Matip's deal makes it more unlikely the defender will sign permanently, unless he can go onto have a major impact between now and the end of the season.
