The Cameroon international has allegedly agreed a pre-contract deal to sign for Liverpool this summer.
The 24-year-old’s current contract expires in the summer, leaving him free to agree a summer switch to the Premier League club in the interim.
The latest report suggests that negotiations have been ongoing for some time and that Liverpool and the player’s representatives have finally come to an agreement regarding a deal.
Manager Jurgen Klopp gave the players he inherited a chance to impress before moving for any new additions. However the Reds’ back-line is in urgent need of reinforcements so it is no surprise the German has seemingly moved for a player he would have known well from his time in the Bundesliga.
Matip has played his entire career to date at Schalke, making 243 appearances, scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists in that time.
This season he has featured 26 times for the German club and he has also been capped a total of 27 times for Cameroon, and with four goals already this season he could be the goal-scoring centre-back Liverpool need to add more attacking threat from set-pieces.
