Sunderland had a huge result on Saturday in their fight against relegation.
Sunderland were showing signs of resurgence in the two matches directly before their latest outing against Manchester United, so it was no great surprise to see the Black Cats secure their first league victory against the Red Devils at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
An early goal from the impressive Wahbi Khazri shocked United into action and Louis van Gaal’s side had the better of the first half thereafter, with Anthony Martial slotting in from a tight angle six minutes before the break.
From there it looked like United would go on to secure the victory, but another of Sunderland's January signings, Lamine Kone, powered home a header that deflected in off David de Gea.
That result took Sunderland to within one point of safety with 12 matches remaining, and some of their players took to Twitter after the game to celebrate the famous and much needed win.
Kone said that he was proud to have helped his side to the three points while full-back Patrick van Aahnholt, who is enjoying a wonderful campaign, wrote, “What a joy today! Great victory and amazing support!”
Sunderland stopped Vito Mannone also hailed the fantastic win while thanking the fans for their support and striker Fabio Borini had his say.
