Aston Villa appeared certainties to be relegated this season.
Villa are currently eight points adrift of safety, and they lost 6-0 to Liverpool in their most recent outing.
The Claret and Blues have won just three matches all season, and Carragher doesn’t believe that Remi Garde’s side are even equipped to compete for promotion from the Championship, as things stand.
"If that team are in the Championship, they’ll be nearer the bottom than the top," Carragher said. "There’s no doubt.
"I always think with teams who go down there’s two or three players, who other teams will try and buy. I cannot imagine one Premier League manager looking at that team and thinking there’s one player that they’d want in their squad."
Villa’s defeat against Liverpool was particularly alarming, due to the lack of fight that Garde’s players showed.
The Claret and Blues were thoroughly outplayed by Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp’s side ran amok at Villa Park.
Villa actually went into the match on the back of a victory over Norwich City, but any momentum gained from that win has been extinguished.
Villa’s next match comes against Stoke City in two weekends’ time, but the Midlands side already looked resigned to their fate.
