Alan Shearer said on Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night (February 13) that Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren should be worried.
The Newcastle legend made the comments following the Magpies’ humiliating 5-1 defeat to Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
The defeat means that McClaren’s side are now third from bottom in the Premier League table.
Shearer believes that the Newcastle head coach should be worried about his team and has pointed out an embarrassing stat.
“He (McClaren) has to be extremely worried like the rest of the fans,” Shearer said on Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night (February 13).
“Defensively it was embarrassing from Newcastle, and it was hopeless – they have to improve," added the former England international striker. "Seven goals away from home all season, that is the worst in all four divisions. That tells its own story.”
Newcastle have been disappointing all season, and there is a real danger that they could get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
Although not many would have expected the Magpies to win at Stamford Bridge, it was the manner in which McClaren’s side collapsed that was the most disconcerting.
Newcastle are not back in action until March 2, and fans will hope that the players will come back stronger after this mini-break.
