The 52-year-old is the bookies' favourite for the Derby job - but would be perfect for Newcastle right here, right now.
Indeed, Nigel Pearson is a no-nonsense leader who would be ideal for St James' Park right now.
McClaren, meanwhile, well... you have to question his sanity.
While Newcastle plummet to a new low every few weeks, the former England (and Derby) boss continues to waltz around, laughing, smiling and praising his struggling side.
The owner needs to stop being pally with McClaren and pull the trigger. Pearson was masterful in the way he kept Leicester City up last season and just look at them now.
Full credit to Claudio Ranieri but Pearson laid the foundations. He's controversial - yes - but he's tough.
Newcastle actually need someone who'll have a go at the press - not just smile and talk about how wonderful his out-of-form players are. And they need a disciplinarian. It's clear the players don't respect McClaren and certainly aren't playing like they are fearful of him.
Why remain in denial and risk relegation when McClaren's time should have been up months ago...?
