Manchester United have turned a corner, says Paul Merson.
SkySports pundit Paul Merson has been a vocal critic of Manchester United this season.
If he has not been writing off their top four hopes, he has been calling against them in his weekly predictions column.
He said: "Manchester United have turned the corner, I've been impressed.
"They looked really good at Chelsea and thoroughly deserved a draw at least. Sunderland, meanwhile, will have felt they did well against Man City, despite losing, and then they got a lucky draw at Liverpool if I'm being honest.
"We will have to see whether the speculation surrounding Louis van Gaal's future affects United but they seem to have turned the corner and I expect them to win at the Stadium of Light."
Merson predicts United will beat Sunderland 2-1, while on this week's SkySports Fantasy Football Club podcast he refused to rule out the possibility that they could catch fourth placed Manchester City and finish inside the top four.
The gap is just six points, and with City hosting second placed Spurs this weekend after losing to Leicester, the Red Devils could halve their lead to just three if results go their way.
United should really have beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend, only conceding an injury time equaliser to a Diego Costa strike.
The problem Louis van Gaal's side face is they are just one loss away from calamity again. A City win against Spurs and a United loss at the Stadium of Light - and the knives will be out for the Dutchman, there is no room for any error any more.
