Charlie Nicholas blasts Arsenal over sale of Benik Afobe

The former Gunner believes he should have been given a chance ahead of the likes of Nicklas Bendtner.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12pm February 6th, Charlie Nicholas has blasted Arsenal for not giving Benik Afobe a chance but keeping Nicklas Bendtner.

The Gunners decided to sell Afobe last January in a £2m deal to Wolves, with him having failed to make a single appearance in the Premier League for Arsene Wenger’s side.

He did impress in various loan spells in the Championship though, and then again at Wolves, with his sole year at Molineux persuading Bournemouth to pay big for him in this January transfer window.

That has led to some saying Arsenal made a mistake in letting him go, and Nicholas is one of them, saying Afobe could have had a fruitful career at the Emirates if they hadn’t decided to stick with the likes on Bendtner instead.

“Arsenal have held people back by keeping Bendtner and people like that,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“They were getting chances when they were done, and then the others missed their opportunity to go.”

“They should have kept this kid [Afobe] and [Chuba] Akpom should be at club. He can score goals coming off the bench for Arsenal and that’s vital.”

Afobe will now be keen to show the Gunners what they are missing as he seeks to score the goals to keep Eddie Howe’s side in the Premier League.

He may have struggled when he came up against his former side last weekend, but a return of three goals in five games is still an excellent start regardless of that game.

If he can continue that kind of form until the end of the season, there is no denying it would be a huge boost to the Cherries’ hopes of avoiding the drop.

And if he does, Arsenal may just wish they had held onto their former youngster afterall.
