Indeed, it was implied the young forward didn't put the effort in during his final weeks at Wolves while requesting to leave the club.
The 22-year-old, however, took to social media stating his position - that he did his best in the Midlands and that he was dignified in asking to leave, ultimately securing a move to the Premier League with Bournemouth.
Some people at Wolves are hanging me out to dry to save their own backs but I won't let my reputation be tarnished. I scored 10... 1/3— Benik Afobé (@Afobe_) February 11, 2016
And was top5 goalscorers in the league before I left and accussed of not trying. I'm a pro and wouldn't disrespect my teammates. End of! 2/3— Benik Afobé (@Afobe_) February 11, 2016
I asked to leave but only because I wanted to play in the Premier League but I never told my teammates or disrupted the changing room. 3/3— Benik Afobé (@Afobe_) February 11, 2016
I won't be commenting anymore, I have a good relationship with everyone at Wolves & the fans. Wish them the best. All about #afcb for me now— Benik Afobé (@Afobe_) February 11, 2016
In response... both Wolves and Bournemouth fans have come out in support of Afobe.
There will always be those who disagree and some supporters suggested the striker was wrong to sign a three-and-a-half year deal before asking to leave the club so soon after.
The Cherries faithful, though, gave the forward their support - they feel he earned a move to Bournemouth and the top flight.
Many, many Wolves fans, meanwhile, don't blame Afobe for wanting to leave Molineux considering the lack of progress the club are making. Here's a selection of the supporter responses...
@Afobe_ Fans are able to judge what they saw with their own eyes Benik. Not the negative spin created by the club and local rag.— Phil Bradley (@wolvesbradders) February 11, 2016
@Afobe_ Don't rise to it. Very unprofessional from them. Keep banging in the goals in the PL and become a club legend here— Alex Deutsch (@alexdeutsch) February 11, 2016
