The attacking midfielder was convinced by manager Steve McClaren.
The midfielder was secured in the summer as the Magpies spent big to try to avoid a relegation battle once again.
Things have not worked out that way though, with Newcastle currently just one point outside the relegation zone with 13 games remaining.
Several of their signings have looked like poor acquisitions, but not the Dutchman, who has impressed in his first season in England.
However he admits that he never thought he would play for Newcastle, as he did not know how big a club they are.
“In the beginning, I never thought that I would play for Newcastle,” he told the Shields Gazette.
“But my manager told me that this was a big club. In Holland we don’t know how big the club is, but this is a really big club.
“I spoke with the manager, and he gave me a really good feeling to sign. After that, I had a good feeling about it and I just followed my heart, that’s why I chose Newcastle.”
Wijnaldum will now be hoping that he can add some away goals to his collection before the end of the season.
He is currently the side’s leading goalscorer with nine goals to his name in the Premier League, but all of those have come at St James’ Park.
Adding some away goals and helping his side to the wins they need to avoid relegation would certainly be a welcome addition to what has so far been an impressive first season for him.
