The Frenchman has been in fantastic form this season.
Dimitri Payet has turned out to be a transfer coup for West Ham United this season. The summer recruit from Marseille was a speculative buy but he has proven himself in England to have been well worth the money.
His good form has however attracted suitors. Reports this week have linked him with a massive money move to China.
Cottee spent two successful spells as a player at West Ham United. Speaking to Sky Sports News earlier today (11/02/2016) he made his point clear about keeping Payet and the impact the Frenchman has already had at the club:
"In my opinion he brings world-class talent to West Ham United Football Club. That is how good he has been this year.
"I think the fact he was 28 years of age, I don't think some of the clubs wanted to take a chance on him. West Ham are not in a position to buy 21, 22-year-olds and wait for them to mature. West Ham have got to get 27, 28-year-olds that are on top of their game.
"He has been absolutely fantastic this year and the fans have already got their own song for him, he has already gone down into legend as a West Ham player. Like I say he has only been there six or seven months.
"Slaven is a very clever man and he knows he cannot sell Dimitri Payet. Whatever the money is he cannot allow him to leave the football club. What I think we will see happen over the next couple of weeks. We will see Dimitri sign a long-term contract, getting more money, as a reward for his endeavours."
That certainly seems to be the message coming out of Upton Park. It seems Payet wants to stay and the club want to give him a new contract so in good time this transfer rumour will surely be put to bed by the signing of a new West Ham deal for Payet.
Until then West Ham fans will hope that his form does not dip amid the speculation.
