Tiago Ilori says he always saw a future for himself at Liverpool

Anfield Pitch

The 22-year-old is starting to get chances at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori has been speaking to the club’s official website about why he chose the Reds when he initially switched from Sporting Lisbon in 2013.

The Portuguese had to wait patiently for his chance at Anfield, spending the majority of his time to date on loan at Granada, Bordeaux and most recently Aston Villa.

The latter spell was ill-fated and he soon returned to Liverpool where he has been given chances by new manager Jurgen Klopp.

Ilori was part of the Liverpool side that lost 2-1 to West Ham United in the FA Cup fourth round replay on Tuesday evening, and he has since explained that he always felt he would get chances on Merseyside if he worked hard.

“I always thought there could be a future here, that’s why I signed for Liverpool in the first place,” Ilori told liverpoolfc.com.

“I just try and work hard every day. There are a lot of good players at Liverpool for me to learn from; I just take it step by step.”

Ilori has featured three times to date with all his appearances coming in the FA Cup, and while the Reds are now out of that competition he could yet get more minutes in the League or the Europa League in the months ahead.
