The Sunderland striker has joined the French giants on loan.
The Scottish international is out of contract in the summer and was not set to feature regularly for Sunderland under boss Sam Allardyce - so he headed to Ligue 1 in a surprising deal.
Of course he is not the only shock Brit to head to Marseille in recent history. Joey Barton joined the French side on loan in 2012 after a fall out at then parent club QPR.
He did not pull up any roots in France, although certainly caught the eye with his odd French accent, but was a popular figure among the Marseille fans for his never-say-die attitude and honesty.
Today, as reported by Le Phoceen, Fletcher has told the press in France that the former Newcastle United midfielder that he received a text message from Barton after completing his move:
"I was lucky enough to receive a text message from Joey Barton.
"He told me to enjoy to it here to the maximum."
Sunderland outcast Fletcher, who made his Marseille debut in the 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, will now hope to leave as lasting a legacy as Barton did in his relatively brief time in France.
