Mbabu’s contract at St. James’ Park expires at the end of the season, and there has been no suggestions that he is close to signing a new deal as yet.
However, McClaren is adamant that the 20-year-old is part of his long-term plans at the club, as he has been impressed with the youngster’s showings so far.
“Yes, I like him," McClaren said.
“He has a good attitude, he’s a good athlete and he’s strong. He’s willing and wants to do the job. He is wholehearted and you can see he just wants to get up the field with the ball."
Mbabu has played five times for Newcastle this season, after being handed his big chance during an injury crisis.
His performances against Manchester City and Chelsea were particularly impressive, and showed that he could cope with the demands of playing top level football.
Unfortunately for the Switzerland youth international, he has been unable to add to his senior appearances recently, due to injury.
The full-back is, however, due to return to full health in the near future (Chronicle), when he will be looking to rival Paul Dummett for a place in McClaren’s starting line-up.
