Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has told the Liverpool Echo that he thinks Everton are lacking an x-factor, which teams like Arsenal and Tottenham have.
Lukaku, 22, has smashed 16 goals in 25 Premier League games this season, establishing himself as one of the top young strikers in Europe, not just English football.
Unfortunately for the Belgian international, Everton haven't quite had the results to match up with his own personal exploits.
Everton currently sit eighth in the Premier League table, but were languishing in the bottom of the table before 3-0 wins over Newcastle United and Stoke City propelled them into the top half again.
Currently lying 12 points adrift of the top four, Everton are deemed to be underachieving this season, and Lukaku has a theory about why that is.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Lukaku claims that Everton are lacking the 'x-factor' to win the big games, but claims Tottenham - a team that former Toffees ace Kevin Kilbane believes Everton should be challenging (BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily) - do have that in their locker, along with teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.
"The Manchester Uniteds, the Citys, the Chelseas and Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenals, have the x-factor," Lukaku said. "Where they will win the big games, that’s the difference. This season has been two games good, two games bad for us," he added.
Tottenham are just five points off top spot in the Premier League, and some Everton fans will compare the two squads and feel that Roberto Martinez should have his side in a similar position - and Lukaku thinks it may be their lack of 'x-factor' keeping them out of the Champions League places.
Everton have been poor at the back, just as Tottenham have been in recent years, but the difference this year is that Mauricio Pochettino has turned his Spurs defence into the meanest in the Premier League. That's something Martinez must do for next season, or Everton will again be lagging behind the White Hart Lane club.
Should Everton be challenging with Tottenham this season?
