Aitor Karanka shares the reason why Albert Adomah was omitted from Middlesbrough's squad

Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Milton Keynes Dons yesterday evening.

Aitor Karanka has told the Gazette that Albert Adomah was left out of Middlesbrough’s match day squad against Milton Keynes Dons for tactical reasons.

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Adomah’s name was not even included amongst Middlesbrough’s substitutes at stadium:mk yesterday evening.

And Karanka has now confirmed that the rapid winger was dropped from his squad, as he wanted other options on his bench.

“It was a tactical decision,” he said. “I know how important Albert is for us but when you have our squad I have to try to choose the right 18 and I though this 18 was the best.”

Adomah has made 30 appearances for Middlesbrough in all competitions this season, so his omission was a surprise.

The competition for places at the Riverside Stadium is fierce now, however, after Karanka chose to bring in five new additions in the January transfer window.

Despite their increase of options, Karanka’s men could only claim a 1-1 draw against MK Dons.

The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute through Dean Bowditch, and it took a last minute Jordan Rhodes header to rescue a point for Karanka’s men.

The draw has lifted Middlesbrough to the top of the Championship table, but they have now failed to win any of their last four matches.
