The case for Kevin Wimmer being Tottenham Hotspur's most important summer signing

The Austrian arrived at the club from Bundesliga side FC Koln in the summer.

Tottenham Hotspur are in a serious battle for the Premier League table this season as they continue to keep pace with the shock leaders Leicester City.

The club's excellent form can certainly be put down to a couple of new signings. Dele Alli has been nothing short of a revelation in the heart of midfield whilst Toby Alderweireld has added stability and balance to the heart of the Spurs defence.

But there is a real argument that Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer is in fact the club's most important signing of last summer.

The former Koln defender, who cost Spurs a fee reported by the Daily Mail to be in the region of £4.3 million, has struggled for regular first-team football this season but with Jan Vertonghen out of action with an injury he has stepped up to the plate with aplomb over the past month.

In the past this is where Spurs would fall down - with under-par replacements in reserve for the core of the side.

Wimmer has however proven himself as more than capable of handling himself in the Premier League and that has seen Tottenham maintain their excellent form.

Sometimes it is the most unsung of signings that prove themselves the best of heroes in campaigns such as this.

If Spurs go on to pip The Foxes to the title, Wimmer will look like a fantastic move.
