Stuart Pearce gives his verdict on Newcastle’s survival chances, raves about defender

Stuart Pearce backs Newcastle United to retain their Premier League status for next season.

Former Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce said on the Sky Sports Now show on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning (broadcast time 11:32am, February 8) that Newcastle United will not get relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

Pearce has also praised defender Steven Taylor for his performance in the 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at St. James’ Park in the league on Saturday afternoon.

“I think Newcastle will go from strength to strength between now and the end of the season and pull clear of the relegation zone,” said the former Newcastle defender.

“I think Steven Taylor coming back as well, his first game since August I think at the weekend, the captain of the club and a big influence around the club,” added Pearce.

The win against West Brom means that Newcastle are now 17th in the Premier League table with 24 points from 25 matches.

Steve McClaren’s side are just a point above the relegation zone and are still in danger of dropping down to the Championship at the end of the season.

However, the performances of the Magpies in recent weeks have been encouraging, and the fans should be optimistic of survival.

Taylor, who has been at Newcastle his entire professional career, had a good game against West Brom at the weekend.

The 30-year-old defender had a pass accuracy of 90%, created two chances, and made four interceptions, three clearances and one block.
