Seydou Doumbia played for Newcastle Under-21 against Stoke City on Monday.

Newcastle United's Under-21 side lost 2-1 to Stoke City on Monday night, with new signing Seydou Doumbia featuring at St. James' Park.

Dominic Telford opened the scoring from the penalty spot for Stoke, converting after Newcastle defender Jamie Sterry had been sent off for a foul.

Newcastle themselves scored from a penalty thanks to Daniel Barlaser, but Stoke's youngsters claimed the victory, with Liam Banks hitting the winner in the second half.

The big thing for Magpies boss Steve McClaren is that new signing Seydou Doumbia played his first football in a Newcastle shirt since signing from Roma last week.

The Ivorian striker, 28, is on a loan deal with Newcastle until the end of the season, and is looking to build up his match fitness having been an unused substitute in first-team games against Everton and West Bromwich Albion.

Doumbia played the first half against Stoke before being substituted at the break, and he will be hoping to play some part against Chelsea this weekend.
