The Frenchman says the club have finally managed to replace Yohan Cabaye.
The England midfielder was secured from Swansea City in the January transfer window, as manager Steve McClaren spent big to try and ensure his side’s Premier League survival.
He has made an impressive start to life at St James’ Park as well, with his debut against West Ham United demonstrating clearly the skills the Magpies have been sorely missing.
And one man who is delighted with his capture is Moussa Sissoko, saying Shelvey is the perfect replacement for former star Yohan Cabaye, who has been sorely missed since his departure in 2014.
“The players who have come in will help us stay up. The club has brought in some very good players. We now have a good team,” he told the Mirror.
“I really believe that the club has now replaced Cabaye. Jonjo is the replacement two years after. Jonjo, like Yohan, is a very good player. He sees the game so easily and delivers great balls.”
“For me, he is the same style as Yohan and the same qualities, so for me, yes, he is an excellent signing for us.”
McClaren’s side will certainly be hoping that Shelvey can be the creative force they need to escape relegation this season.
He has certainly indicated he can be, with that fine performance against the Hammers and an assist for Aleksandar Mitrovic’s winner against West Bromwich Albion on the weekend.
They will be keen to see him replicate that in the games remaining, with the relegation race looking likely to be one that goes right down to the wire once again.
