Tony Gale urges Remi Garde to stick by Aston Villa's British players

Aston Villa picked up a 2-0 victory over Norwich City at the weekend, to move slightly closer to safety.

Tony Gale has told Sky Sports that Aston Villa need to stick by a British core if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

Remi Garde started with a number of British players against Norwich City, as Villa picked up an important 2-0 victory.

The win was just the second three-point haul Villa have collected in front of their own supporters all season.

And Gale said: "The most important thing for Aston Villa is they've dragged Norwich right into the relegation battle with victory.

"Remi Garde played Joleon Lescott, Ashley Westwood and Gabriel Agbonlahor and I thought that was significant. He had plenty of British players in the team and going forward more of the same is required if they are to have the slightest chance of survival.

"Villa need to persist with the British players ahead of some of the foreign players because they know what's needed in the relegation fight."

Villa beat Norwich thanks to goals from Joleon Lescott and Gabriel Agbonlahor, as they helped raise optimism levels around Villa Park slightly.

Although the Claret and Blues still seem to have very little chance of staying up, their form under Garde has improved of late.

Villa appear to have become tougher to beat and they have reduced the gap between them and safety to eight points.

Villa are next in action against Liverpool on Sunday, and if they could beat Jurgen Klopp’s side they would start to look less isolated at the bottom of the table.
