Steve McClaren names Newcastle United's three heroes against West Bromwich Albion

Newcastle United beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 on Saturday to move out of the relegation zone.

Steve McClaren has told the Guardian that Steven Taylor, Cheick Tiote and Rolando Aarons were all heroes for Newcastle United against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

The Magpies picked up a valuable 1-0 win over the Baggies at St. James’ Park on Saturday, which has lifted them out of the relegation zone.

And McClaren has hailed the contributions of Taylor, Tiote and Aarons, who all started the fixture without being fully fit.

“The heroes were Steven, Cheiky and Rolando,” McClaren said.

“With Taylor and Tioté we had fight and character on the field. Their spirit is exactly what we need. If you get that from those two, the rest follow. They’re so aggressive in the way they play. Tioté has only been back training with us for two days but he’s 100% committed and, if he keeps his composure and passes simply, he’s a very good player. I hope he stays now.”

Taylor, Tiote and Aarons have all missed a large amount of football this season, but they did not look short of match sharpness against West Brom.

Newcastle put in an excellent performance against the Baggies, as they picked up just their sixth victory in 25 Premier League matches this season.

McClaren’s side scored their winner through Aleksandar Mitrovic, with new signings Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey both looking sharp throughout the match.

Newcastle have now leapfrogged Norwich City in the Premier League standings, and they will be looking to move even further clear of the drop zone by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
