Phil Thompson has raved about Newcastle's performance against West Bromwich Albion.
Pundit Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that Newcastle's performance against West Brom was the best he's seen them play this season.
The Magpies went into the game having been thrashed 3-0 by Everton just days earlier, but climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over West Brom.
Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic hit the only goal of the game in the first half, latching on to Jonjo Shelvey's through ball before slotting past Ben Foster.
The stats from the game told a clear story; Newcastle had 19 shots on goal and 69% of possession, dominating the game - but they could only find one goal, even though that was enough to claim all three points at St. James' Park.
After the game, pundit Phil Thompson spoke to Sky Sports about the performance from Steve McClaren's men, and made a bold claim, stating that it was the best he's seen Newcastle perform for 90 minutes this season, hailing displays from Rolando Aarons, Daryl Janmaat, Jonjo Shelvey and Cheick Tiote.
Thompson also analysed the performance of new signing Andros Townsend, who was making his home debut after signing from Tottenham in January. Thompson felt the winger was 'terrific', and hailed his direct style.
"This is as good as I've seen Newcastle over a 90 minute spell," said Thompson. "Rob Elliot didn't have a save to make, the defence was great, Rolando Aarons - the makeshift left back - was terrific, Daryl Janmaat was again overlapping, Jonjo Shelvey was in his quarterback role, Tiote was brilliant - everything about this side, it was just great. Everything about this Newcastle game was just terrific. All that was missing was more goals."
"He did very well. He takes the game [to the defence] as we know, gets from A to B very quickly, he's very good with his feet. He again had a terrific game - you wouldn't have thought that Newcastle were in problems," he added.
