Newcastle boss McClaren praises Coloccini's character; says his desire to play despite injury goes unnoticed

Newcastle United got a vital 1-0 win on the board on Saturday.

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has been speaking to the Chronicle about his defender Fabricio Coloccini.

The Argentine has featured in every single Premier League match for the Magpies this season and for all his critics he played an integral role in ensuring his side kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, preventing the Baggies from having a single shot on target.

Newcastle’s back-line has come under pressure as they have struggled near the bottom of the table, but their latest win lifted them out of the relegation zone.

There is still plenty of work to do in the weeks ahead. However, McClaren could not help but praise his skipper.

“We had a patched-up defence,” the Newcastle boss told the Chronicle. “Colo has been on the treatment table for the last few days with a swollen knee and I think that goes unnoticed but it epitomises the leadership.

“He wanted to play and that’s what we need between now and the end of the season: a character like that.”

Next up for Newcastle is a trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea and if the Magpies win that one they will have well and truly turned a corner.
