Jamie Redknapp comments on Kevin Wimmer's emergence at Tottenham

Kevin Wimmer has stepped in for the injured Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham.

Jamie Redknapp has praised Kevin Wimmer's recent displays after stepping in for Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen was injured in Tottenham Hotspur's win over Crystal Palace last month, sustaining a MCL injury projected to keep him out of action for 12 weeks.

Former midfielder Redknapp told The Mail he worried about how Spurs would get on, but says his fears have been allayed.

He said: "I feared for them when Jan Vertonghen was injured but Kevin Wimmer has stepped in and they still look solid, while Kieran Trippier is showing what he can do.

"They might be a young side but they should have no fear heading to Man City next weekend, especially after what Leicester did."

Wimmer has the biggest test of his Tottenham career next week at The Etihad, when he and Toby Alderweireld will come up against City frontman Sergio Aguero, who has an excellent record against Spurs.

The Mirror have reported though that City are missing seven first team stars for the fixture, including David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne.

Wimmer has slotted in well at Spurs so far, helping the side to wins over Norwich City and Watford in the Premier League, keeping clean sheets in both.

What is yet unclear is how much is down to him, and to what degree it is Mauricio Pochettino's system reaping the rewards, but at least he has not self-destructed like loaned out centre-back Federico Fazio has shown a tendency to do for Spurs and Sevilla.
