Paul Merson impressed with Everton’s Ross Barkley

The midfielder was impressive again in the 3-0 win over Stoke City.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12pm February 7th, Paul Merson has praised Everton star Ross Barkley.

The young midfielder has returned to his best form this season, with a series of impressive performances for Roberto Martinez’s team.

He was in fine form this week with two goals in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United and a similarly fine display in the weekend victory over Stoke City.

And Merson has praised him, explaining he likes that he is always looking to get on the ball, which is an important aspect for a young player.

“The one thing with him is he always gets on the ball. That’s a big thing if you can get that in your game,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“He plays in an older man’s position, it’s very rare you get a young kid playing in the position he plays in, usually you’re 27 or 28 and you’ve earned the right. He’s top drawer.”

It will now be interesting to see if England manager Roy Hodgson can fit both players into his starting 11 for Euro 2016 this summer.

Both have been in fantastic form this season and are regular starters for both Everton and Tottenham, and it is hard to decide which should start on the bench if they are selected in the squad as expected.

A positive though, is that Hodgson even has the choice to make with him sure to be pleased with how England’s young talents are developing this year.
