Indeed, a relegation-threatened side can't always afford to celebrate draws but, 2-0 down at Anfield, this was definitely a bonus point hard earned by the Black Cats.
The Reds were in control throughout and a 77th-minute mass walkout from fans certainly swung the momentum, before Alberto Moreno gave a very poor free-kick away and Simon Mignolet made a typical Mignolet error as Adam Johnson netted the subsequent set-piece.
But Sunderland still had to take advantage and, unlike the protesting Liverpool fans (who had good reason to do what they did), the away fans stayed throughout.
And Allardyce sent a message to his side's 'amazing' supporters after their comeback point.
Amazing noise from the sold out away end yesterday! We will keep fighting…onto Man United in the early kick off next Saturday. #SAFC— Sam Allardyce (@OfficialBigSam) February 7, 2016
Sunderland host Manchester United during the Premier League's early kick-off next Saturday.
Can the Black Cats fight off relegation this season? And, if so, who will go down in their stead?
