Alan Shearer said on Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night (February 6) that Jonjo Shelvey was outstanding for Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.
Shelvey, who joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Swansea City in the January transfer window, featured against West Bromwich Albion at St. James’ Park.
The 23-year-old midfielder played an important role for the Magpies, as the home team won the Premier League match 1-0.
Newcastle legend Shearer was impressed with the performance of the England international and raved about him on Match of the Day on BBC One on Saturday night (February 6).
“Well, slightly surprising, because they have not been able to score goals and they haven’t been able to keep them out, so they signed three midfielders!” said Shearer when pointed out that Newcastle signed four players in the January transfer window. “Having said that, one of the midfielders I thought was absolutely outstanding today, Jonjo Shelvey.
"If you are going to give this guy time on the ball, then he is more than capable of knocking passes. He often picked the ball up off the back four and sprayed it around, and he kept the ball moving and moving it at pace."
“If he keeps on performing like that, then he will be a real fans favourite, they will love him there," added the former Newcastle striker.
Against West Brom on Saturday afternoon, Shelvey took four shots, had a pass accuracy of 90%, created three chances, put in three crosses, and made three interceptions.
Newcastle are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment with 24 points from 25 matches.
Steve McClaren’s side are a point above third-from-bottom Norwich City and remain in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
