Phil Thompson says Mark Noble is the first name on West Ham's teamsheet, not Payet

The Sky Sports pundit has been lauding the West Ham skipper.

Phil Thompson believes Mark Noble is the first name on the West Ham United teamsheet - not Dimitri Payet, according to Sky Sports.

Indeed, while the pundit can't deny the quality of the diminutive Frenchman - no one can - he is more impressed with the consistency of captain Noble.

And he believes the midfielder is an '8/10 every week.'

Thompson told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday: "He’s an 8/10 every week. He’s the one constant in this side. He must be the first name on the teamsheet. You say Payet but this guy is priceless."

From West Ham fans themselves has come plenty of criticism for Noble over the years.

But there are those who agree the 28-year-old deserves an England call-up - especially when you consider the fact a few caps have been wasted on the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and co.

One thing to note is Thompson's obsession with rather boring players who work hard but don't offer much else - his admiration of James Milner borders the illogical.

Noble has clearly offered far more than Milner so far this season, though, and his consistency is certainly a huge bonus for West Ham.
