Paul Merson makes a comparison between Aston Villa and Newcastle United

Both Aston Villa and Newcastle United are in danger of getting relegated from the Premier League.

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Aston Villa are a bigger club than Newcastle United.

Merson, who played for the Villans from 1998 to 2002, has used Villa’s past success and trophies to make his point.

“Aston Villa are going to be the biggest club of the Premier League era to go down,” the former England international wrote in The Daily Star. “Because they will go down. Let’s not kid ourselves.

“People say Newcastle are a big club and they went down. They’re not as big as Villa. They haven’t won the European Cup. They haven’t won anything in 50-odd years!"

Villa and Newcastle are two of the biggest clubs of England, but there is a chance that both of them could be playing in the Championship next season.

The Villans and Magpies have been disappointing all season and are very much in danger of getting relegated from the Premier League.

There is still time, though, for both Villa and Newcastle to rescue their season, but the players will have to step up their game and raise their standards.

As for the discussion whether Villa are bigger than Newcastle, it would not matter much if both go down.

The likes of Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Leeds United and Middlesbrough are all big clubs, but they are all in the Championship at the moment.
