Newcastle United cult hero Jonas Gutierrez sends series of inspiring tweets prior to West Brom tie

The Argentine is still clearly fond of the club.

In the summer Newcastle United allowed two of their longest serving players leave the club.

Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez both had their respective problems off the pitch, none of which self-inflicted.

Taylor had a torrid time with serious knee injuries whilst Gutierrez battled cancer to come back and score the defining goal of Newcastle's season against West Ham.

John Carver informed Taylor over the phone that he was to be released, who was then told to pass the phone to Jonas so he could break the news to the Argentine.

It was a terrible way to handle the situation with a man so popular with the Newcastle fans.

Whilst the club treated him poorly the player himself still loves Newcastle United and the fans. Today he showed his colours. He sent a number of tweets prior to Newcastle's meeting with West Brom highlighting his hopes for a Newcastle win:

The messages were well received by Newcastle fans - who will never forget his time at the club and the dignity with which he handled himself through a battle with a ruthless disease.

Gutierrez is currently playing his football with Deportivo La Coruna in Spain but will always remain a special figure at St James' Park.
