The two Tottenham Hotspur defenders will play alongside each other a lot in the coming weeks.
The Austrian international signed from Cologne in the summer but he had to wait patiently for his chances, only making his Premier League debut at the end of January against Crystal Palace.
That came after an injury setback for Jan Vertonghen and with the Belgian international side-lined for some time Wimmer now has the change to forge an effective partnership with Alderweireld.
The signs were there in the recent match against Norwich City and the former Atletico Madrid man was quick to praise Wimmer’s contribution against the Canaries.
“Kevin did really well,” Alderweireld told tottenhamhotspur.com. “I’ve played a couple of Europa League matches with him as well and he’s very comfortable on the ball, he knows how we have to play and there is a good connection between us – that’s important.
“This is a good opportunity for him and I’m sure – in fact, I know – he will do well.”
Wimmer may have had limited chances to date but he will have been training with his Tottenham teammates for quite a while, showing what he can do at close quarters.
The strength in depth Spurs now have looks set to play a vital role as they continue to challenge on three fronts and the patience Wimmer showed should now pay rich dividends.
