Sol Campbell says Tottenham's Dele Alli must show his quality for five or six years before being considered a great

An ex-Tottenham Hotspur player has been speaking about a current one.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender Sol Campbell has been speaking to SportLobster about midfielder Dele Alli.

The 19-year-old has been nothing short of sensational for Spurs this season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 31 appearances to date.

His world-class strike against Crystal Palace last month prompted comparisons to some of the best goals ever scored and while Tottenham fans will not want to get carried away, there is no doubt Alli is a star in the making.

However, speaking to SportLobster Campbell urged caution when judging the youngster.

“I don’t really want to know about a player until five or six years down the line and I can see their consistency,” Campbell said.

“We have seen players light up this league before for two or three years and then drop off and fade away. I am not saying Dele Alli will do that, but he needs to keep going.”

The player himself will know this is only the start of what he hopes will be a long and successful career, and if he keeps his feet on the ground there is no doubt he could become one of Tottenham’s greatest ever players.

He really is that good, and while Campbell may not want to know about a player until he is doing it year after year, Tottenham fans will no doubt be lapping up every single sparkling performance.
