Former Sunderland striker Niall Quinn suggested on the Deadline Day show on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday evening (February 1, broadcast time 10:54pm) that Seydou Doumbia will prove to be a good signing for Newcastle United.
Doumbia joined Newcastle on loan from Italian club AS Roma on transfer deadline day.
The 28-year-old forward will remain at St. James’ Park until the end of the season, and former Sunderland star Quinn expects him to score goals and make himself a fan favourite.
“I watched him a lot in the Champions League. I have seen him score goals in Italy, but in Russia mostly. I think Newcastle fans will like him because he is a ‘Jack in the box’, he is a poacher, and that’s exactly what they need.”
Doumbia joined Roma from CSKA Moscow in January 2015, but he struggled to make a huge impact in Serie A.
The Ivory Coast international forward managed to make just 13 appearances for the Giallorossi before returning to CSKA on loan in the summer of 2015.
The 28-year-old recovered his form and confidence in Moscow, scoring five goals and creating 16 chances in nine appearances in the Russian Premier League this season.
Doumbia also scored three goals and created three chances in six Champions League games for CSKA this campaign.
