Phil Thompson praises the improvement in 'flaky' Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is set to miss a considerable amount of the rest of the season with injury.

Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, which was broadcast on January 30th, that he felt Tottenham Hotspur centre back Jan Vertonghen was ‘flaky’ prior to this season.

Vertonghen joined Spurs in 2012 and he has been a key player for the entirety of his time at White Hart Lane.

However, it is not until this season, and the arrival of Toby Alderweireld, that Vertonghen has been able to convince Thompson of his quality.

“Vertonghen and Alderweireld have been the best two centre backs in the Premier League by a mile,” Thompson said.

“They’ve been great. I always thought Vertonghen has been a bit flaky, but Alderweireld has brought it out of him, and he’s been rock solid.”

Vertonghen and Alderweireld’s partnership at the heart of Tottenham’s defence has been a major reason behind the Lilywhites' impressive showings this season.

The pair have been formidable throughout the campaign so far, and they have helped Spurs keep the best defensive record in the Premier League.

Vertonghen is set to miss the next eight weeks with injury, though, with Kevin Wimmer set to take his place in the starting line-up.

Wimmer has rarely featured since moving to Spurs in the summer, but he was brought into Pochettino’s side’s defence in midweek, and he helped them keep a clean-sheet in a 3-0 victory over Norwich City.
