Jan Kirchoff might just turn out to be a good signing for Sunderland after all.
The German endured a nightmare debut against Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago, which was described as one of the worst in Premier League history.
The former Bayern Munich man was trusted by Sam Allardyce against Manchester City, picked in a defensive midfield role in front of the back four.
Fortunately for Kirchoff, this was a game in which he showed a major improvement, despite City going on to win 1-0.
Kirchoff made it difficult for City to extend the advantage provided by Sergio Aguero. He touched the ball 90 times, more than any player on the pitch, ahead of influential opponent David Silva (87).
He won three aerial duels, and won six tackles, with five interceptions, each the highest among the Sunderland side.
The defeat means Sunderland remain in the relegation zone with 19 points, four from safety.
Here is a look at how Sunderland fans reacted to his display on Twitter...
#SAFC Where are those fans who said Kirchoff should be sold back to Germany? They are rather quiet— Daniel Jenks (@DanielJenks89) February 2, 2016
Can't fault the effort from #SAFC tonight. Kirchoff class in front of back four, Kone so composed. Khazri looked sharp at times. POSITIVE!— FEEK (@F_E_E_K) February 2, 2016
New boys ran the show, Kirchoff man of the match, confident we will be fine if we keep playing with that effort #safc— Joe (@JOESAFC73) February 2, 2016
Feel the need to apologise to Kirchoff. Class tonight. #SAFC— Lee Wickham (@LdoubleE_87) February 2, 2016
