Steve McClaren confirms January interest in Ayoze Perez

Ayoze Perez agreed a contract extension with Newcastle United on deadline day.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Steve McClaren has confirmed that teams wanted to sign Newcastle star Ayoze Perez, before the Spaniard agreed a contract extension.

McClaren said: “He had interest from other clubs and attracted that interest but he wants to sign us for five years.”

Perez agreed a new deal at St James’ Park until 2020, signing the contract officially on deadline day.

Despite the Magpies being very active in the transfer market in signing a number of impressive players, tying down Perez was one of their best moves.

The 22-year-old talent is an incredible talent, who is only going to improve over the coming years.

He scores goals and creates them, and has the versatility and talent to play in a number of attacking positions.

His reputation has grown rapidly since his move to Newcastle from the Spanish second division, and his form for the Magpies has seen him linked to rival Premier League sides.

The Mirror claim that Perez has been watched by both Manchester United and Spurs, who have been impressed by his talents since his move to England.

McClaren has confirmed that Perez was interesting other teams, but now that a long-term contract has been signed, the Spaniard should be remaining at St James’ Park for the foreseeable future.
