Paul Merson says life as an Everton fan must be frustrating, predicts Newcastle result

Paul Merson believes Everton will beat Newcastle comfortably, despite being confused by the team's unpredictable form.

Newcastle United and Everton both had interesting transfer windows, each adding strikers on deadline day with Seydou Doumbia and Oumar Niasse.

The two sides do battle at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, each aiming to pick up momentum to put a run together between now and the end of the season.

Roberto Martinez is a manager under pressure after recent under whelming results, which included a disappointing cup semi-final exit last week.

Steve McClaren is also a boss in need of three points, having been backed in the transfer market by owner Mike Ashley, he now needs his team to deliver.

Former footballer Paul Merson is backing Everton to win, believing Romelu Lukaku will inspire the Toffees to victory, but critical comments for the team's inconsistent form.

He told SkySports: "I really thought Roberto Martinez's side would dominate Swansea, but they just didn't turn up. They've got star players but they just don't win football matches. It must be so frustrating to be an Everton fan.

"You look at the team when it comes out onto the pitch and think it's a tremendous side. There are not many of those players that do not get in other teams in the Premier League.

"On the other hand, Newcastle have bought well this month and have played well in patches. But Everton have got too many good players and sooner or later they have to start winning football matches. I'm backing Everton again, this time by a score of 3-1 with Romelu Lukaku scoring first."

If there is a team who can make Everton look good, it is Newcastle. For all their impressive attacking additions in the transfer window, Steve McClaren did not sign a single defender.

With a player as dangerous as Romelu Lukaku in attack, Newcastle could be rich pickings if Everton turn up inspired by their deadline day addition of Niasse.
