Jose Enrique missed out on a return to former club Newcastle on deadline day.
No matter how hard they try, Liverpool can't quite manage to get rid of Jose Enrique.
The Spaniard has been out of favour under successive managers Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, but has refused the chance to leave the club to play regular football.
He had an opportunity to sign with West Bromwich Albion in the summer which he turned down, and on deadline day former side Newcastle United made a desperate overture to bring him back to help address their left-back crisis.
The Mail reported that a proposed loan deal broke down, with the player unable to agree terms.
Instead he appears likely to continue until the end of the season on the Liverpool sidelines, until his inevitable release when his contract expires.
Enrique was signed back in 2011 by Kenny Dalglish, but has slipped further down the pecking order as the years have gone by.
The 29-year-old has not played any Premier League games this season, with his last appearance coming against Exeter in the FA Cup.
Here is a look at how Liverpool fans reacted on Twitter to his exit falling through...
Seriously, just leave #LFC Jose Enrique. I have no other words for you. We want to get rid of £65,000 per week.— Dani ➕✖️ (@daniworldstar) February 1, 2016
